FPV series part 1: Usefull Resources

This article is part of a serie about the FPV drone hobby.

Here you will find the full list of articles

There is a ton of things you will have to learn to operate and mantain your drone.

This series doesn't aim to cover cover everything there is to know.

I've decided to dedicate the first episode to list the most helpful resources I've found so far.

With the help of communities and tutorials listed here you should be able to overcome any obstacle.

Tutorials and Knowledge

Many enthusiasts have dedicate their time to divulgate knowledge about the hobby, here are my favourite ones.

Joshua Bardwell

A.K.A. JB has shared a ton of content on his youtube channel. Tutorials on:

Almost every time I've needed to figure out how to solve an issue JB had already a video on it.

He is also hosting a section on his website where he recommends the gears he thinks are the most appropriate by category and budget.

If you really wish you can also become a patreon and gain access to his discord channel where you can seek help from his community.

Oscar Liang

Think of Oscar Liang as the textual version of Joshua Bardwell.

When I'm not in the mood of watching a 20 minute video ofthen Oscar has covered that topic on his website

So if you prefer to read and scroll over watching a youtube video he is your guy

Software

Almost certaily at some point you will have to configure your drone or yor radio.

There is a handfull of open source projects that are indispensable to fly a drone and each of them has a website where you can find documentation information on how to configure them.

EdgeTX

EdgeTX is the firmware that run on most radios. With it you can customize how you interaction with the radio are transformed in commands that are then send over your radio link.

It has a lot of great and useful features that allows to configure fairly complex behaviours.

Menus are sometimes not intuitive and some help from the doc might keep you going. Sometimes however watching a video is a better option.

ExpressLRS

ExpressLRS also known as ELRS is the most widespread radio link. It is cheap, it offers very good performances and it is open source.

Sometimes you will need to flash or configure your trasmitter and/or receiver.

On the ExpressLRS website you will find all the information you need.

BetaFlight

This is the most popular firmware that almost every pilot run on their flight controller.

It is a fairly complex piece of software and unfortunatelly the documentation is not always great. Don't be surprised to find incomplete or outdated info in it.

nevertheless it remains a good starting point to solve some betaflight issues.

Support

When tutorials and documentation can't help the online communities can give you an hand.

Reddit

r/fpv or r/tinywhoop are good places where to troubleshoot your issues. I reccommend this platform to discuss more complex issues that require an asynchronous discussion

Discord

Discord is nowaday a very popular place where to chat and ask about many projects.

This are the servers you might want to join

Some influencer (like JB) also have a server where their community gather and you might consider joining one of them

Forums

I honestly don't have much experience with them but I don't doubt that there might be forums where FPV issues are discussed.

If Reddit or Discord fail on you, you might try your luck in there too.
